Pete Davidson appears to joke about rushing to propose on a
'Saturday Night Live' promo. And former fiancée Ariana Grande is not
amused.
USA TODAY
Pete Davidson had quite
the lead-up to his appearance on this week's "Saturday Night Live" --
after he cracked a joke about his broken engagement to Ariana Grande in
one of the episode's promos, which offended her enough to slam him on
Twitter and release a song referencing their split, "Thank U, Next,"
minutes before the show aired at 11:30 p.m. EST.
In
response, Davidson offered an olive branch to Grande during his first
major appearance on the night's episode, in which he joined Michael Che
for a "Weekend Update" segment about the midterm elections, ending his
bit with a message to viewers about his and Grande's breakup.
"The
last thing I will say is, I know some of you are curious about the
breakup, but the truth is, it's nobody's business, and sometimes things
just don't work out and that's OK," he said. "She's a wonderful, strong
person and I wish her all the happiness in the world. Now please, go
vote on Tuesday. "
More 'SNL': 'Saturday Night Live' jokes about Alec Baldwin's arrest after his Trump is a no-show
Davidson
kicked off the segment by joking about the recent changes in his living
situation, referencing his move out of the apartment he shared with
Grande after they split.
"The midterm elections are
obviously a huge deal, and after I had to move back in with my mom, I
started paying attention," he said.
Davidson was
one of several exes Grande referenced on "Thank U, Next," along with Big
Sean, Ricky Alvarez and Mac Miller: "Thought I'd end up with Sean but
he wasn't a match / Wrote some songs about Ricky now I listen and laugh /
Even almost got married and for Pete, I'm so thankful / Wish I could
say, "Thank you" to Malcolm 'cause he was an angel."
Grande
seemed less charitable towards Davidson several days ago, after
Davidson's ill-advised "SNL" promo in which he proposed to musical guest
Maggie Rogers and joked "0 for 3" when she rejected him.
"For
somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh,"
Grande wrote on Twitter about Davidson. "Thank u, next."
